Oberlin coach says boys team improved in 2nd half

OBERLIN -- The Decatur Community High School-Oberlin boys basketball team fell to Beloit in the Kansas sub-state game on Tuesday and finished the season 5-16.

Coach Dick Ahlberg said he felt like his team improved the second half of the season and became a more competitive team.

"We were proud of our team for showing good character under some adversity," Ahlberg said. We played guys up at higher levels than anticipated."

Andy Inman led the Red Devils. He averaged 12.8 points and 6.5 rebounds a game.

Logan Fortin followed at 7.8, Jesse Juenemann was 6.7 and Jobey Black was 5.3. Teryn Grafel averaged 4.8 in points 5.8 in rebounds and Nolan May was 3.9 in points and 4.5 in rebounds.

Juenemann averaged 3.5 in rebounds, followed by Black at 3.0 and Andy Gilliam with a 2.1 average. Juenemann, Fortin and Inman led the team in assists. Grafel joined Inman and Juenemann as leaders in steals.

Ahlberg said he expects the Red Devils to be an improved team next season.

"We feel like some of our younger players, who have good talent gained enough experience this season to help the team," he said.

"We should have good depth and there should be some stiff competition for playing time at both the varsity and JV playing levels. We would like to thank the community, parents and students for their support this year."
