WASHINGTON, Iowa -- Ava Hix, 91, died Saturday (Feb. 25, 2006) at Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa.

She was born Jan. 22, 1915, in Marion to Jacob Ernest and Grace Relph Weyeneth. She graduated from McCook High School in 1932. She graduated from Evangelical Covenant Hospital School of Nursing in Omaha in 1938.

She served as a nurse in the U.S. Army in England and France during World War II.

She married Kenneth L. Hix in McCook on Feb. 5, 1946.

She was a member of a card club and the Friendly Circle Sewing Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth in 2001; a son, Dan; two brothers, Norris and Leonard; and a great-granddaughter, Rebecca Rose Carder.

Survivors include her children, Gail and Joe Gevok of Swisher, Iowa, Joyce Brodie of West Des Moines, Iowa, Duane and Medora Hix of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Kathy and Tom Baker of Fairfield, Iowa; sister, Evelyn Spaulding of Ferguson, Mo.; sister-in-law, Joyce Weyeneth; former son-in-law, Steve Brodie; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be Friday, 10:30 a.m., at First United Methodist Church in Fairfield with the Rev. Mike Metz officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
