OBERLIN -- Sylvester J. Meitl, 86, died Wednesday (Feb. 22, 2006) at the Decatur County Good Samaritan Center in Oberlin.

He was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Summit Township in Decatur County to John Meitl and Bertha Ympa. He attended Leoville High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Faye Votapka on Oct. 24, 1951, in Leoville.

He was a farmer. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Leoville, Sacred Heart Church in Oberlin, Farm Bureau and Polled Hereford Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bertha Meitl; brothers, Ernest and Elmer Meitl; and a sister, Geniveve Campbell.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Meitl of Oberlin; sons, Mark and wife, Leta Meitl of Dresden and Kevin Meitl of Oberlin; daughters, Mary and husband, Jimmy Carrico of Oklahoma City, Okla., Susan Meitl of Mustang, Okla., and Julie Meitl of Yukon, Okla; brothers, Gerald and wife, Lois Meitl of Dresden, Walt and wife, Rosella Meitl of Oberlin, the Rev. Roger Meitl of St. Francis and Harold and wife, Janice Meitl of Green Valley, Ariz.; sister, Jackie Kenney of Indianapolis, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Church in Leoville with the Revs. Roger Meitl and George Kochuvelikkakam officiating. Interment will be at the Mount Calavery Cemetery in Leoville.

Visitation will be today, until 8 p.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin and Saturday, 8 a.m., at the church. Vigil service will be today, 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Memorials are being accepted in his name.
