Bison varsity, JV boys prevail vs. Cozad

The McCook High School varsity and junior varsity boys basketball teams were winners over Cozad Saturday at the MHS gymnasium.

The Bison varsity played its final regular-season game before competing in the Nebraska Class B-5 District Tournament at Lexington Feb. 27-28.

The season ended for the Bison JV boys.

McCook's boys squeezed by Cozad 74-71 in the varsity game, the Bison JV team squashed Cozad's boys 67-42.

Josh Cherry and Garrett Rippen posted 17 points to the Bison win. Joel Arterburn, Joel Putz and Cory Gaston also evened the scoring each with 10 points.

Drew Young led Cozad with 17 point. Jared Crick and Luke Poore followed with 13 points. Scott Fritz had 11 points.

Brady Dame led the Bison JV with 13 points. John Swanhorst followed with 12 points and Cory Gaston had 11.

"We had a slow start, but then our second and third quarter we turned up the defense and put the game away," said JV Coach Dan Hilton.

"It was a nice win for our junior varsity and they had a good season and it was a pleasure working with them this year."

Justin Standage led Cozad with 16 points. Ryan Holbrook followed with 9 points and Josh Heilbrun had 4.

Colby teams

sweep Buffaloes

COLBY -- Colby's basketball teams downed Rawlins County Friday.

The Eagle girls pushed past Rawlins County's girls 49-28 and the boys romped the Buffaloes 67-47.

Nick Howard tallied 18 points for Colby. Trevor Siebert followed with 16 points and Ethan Stover had 11.

Jeff Riener led Rawlins County with 13 points. Rodney Rippe followed with 12 points and Cedric Green had 8.

No individual results for the girls game were available at press time.

The McCook High School girls wll play Hastings at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the frist round of the Class B-4 district tournament at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Health and Sports Center.

The McCook High School gymnasium will be the site for the Class D1-6 girls district championship game between Wauneta-Palisade and Eustis-Farnam.

The game is Friday at 7 p.m. in the McCook Senior High gym. The gym opens at 6 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for students.

Arapahoe's girls gear up for the D1-5 districts as they play Anselmo-Merna at 7 p.m. Friday at Lexington.

Boys matchups

The Medicine Valley boys will play Hitchcock County at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the first round of the Class D-11 tournament at the MHS gym.

Dundy County plays Crawford Monday at the D1-12 tournament at Creek Valley-Chappel.

Maywood plays Brady Monday at the D2-10 tournament at North Platte-St. Pat's.
