Class D state title
at 130 pounds
OOMAHA -- Wauneta-Palisade High School's Jesse West capped a dream season with a state championship at Class D 130 pounds.
West decisioned previously unbeaten Chris Marsh of Sutton 9-8 Saturday afternoon at the Qwest Center in Omaha.
West finished the season with a 42-4 record.
Cambridge's Bronson Soucie finished second at Class D 215 pounds. He lost an 8-7 decision to Howell's Scott Bayer in the title match.
Dundy County's Derrik Bundy finished third with 8-3 win over Scribner-Snyder's Jesse Frizell.
Southern Valley's Dan Stoelting placed third in Class C 215 pounds with a 3-2 win over Harvard-Clay Center's Brad Buerer.
Wauneta-Palisade's Jake Smith placed fourth in Class D 145 pounds. He lost to East Butler's Cody McGee 2-0 in the third-place match.

for state wrestling
OBERLIN -- Northwest Kansas League schools St. Francis, Decatur County-Oberlin and Rawlins County-Atwood qualified 19 wrestlers for the Kansas Class 3-2-1A state tournament Friday and Saturday at Fort Hays State University.
St. Francis and Oberlin finished second and fourth at the regional tournament Saturday with172 and 149 points and each placed eight grapplers in the top four to qualify them for state.
Rawlins County scored 48 points tied for 11th place with Stockton. The Buffaloes will send three wrestlers to the state tournament.
Regional champions from St. Francis were Jordan Gienger, 145 pounds; Russell Rogers, 171; and Brannon Wilger, 275.
Oberlin's regional champion was Jonathan Richards at 140 pounds.
Second-place finishers from St. Francis were Dylan Loyd, 135; and Gabe Smull, 160. Rawlins County's Matt Migchelbrink placed second at 125. Placing second for Oberlin was Brock Euhus, 275.
Third-place finishers from St. Francis were Trevor Richard, 119; and Justin Sherlock, 140. Third-place finishers from Oberlin were Everett Urban, 130; Denton Bailey, 152; and Scott Miller, 160.
Fourth-place finishers from Oberlin were Aaron Helm, 103; Gage Reichert, 119 and Terry Urban, 171. Placing fourth from St. Francis was Gavin Smull, 125. Placing fourth from Rawlins County were Robert Binning, 145; and Shelby Wright, 275.
