Arapahoe, Wauneta-Palisade reach GPAC boys championship game

TRENTON -- Two ranked teams will go head to head for the GPAC boys basketball championship title Saturday.

Arapahoe, 18-0, and Wauneta-Palisade, 12-2, will play for the GPAC crown.

Arapahoe squeezed by Hayes Center 57-46 and Wauneta-Palisade blasted Wallace 69-53 in the semifinals Friday.

Hayes Center managed to take the lead against the Warriors in the first half.

Arapahoe came around in the second half tying it up in the third quarter and pulling ahead by 11 points in the fourth.

Tony Braithwait led the Warriors in scoring with 20 points. Blake Maaske had 19 and Ryan Stagemeyer had 10.

Joseph Frecks led the Cardinals with 13 points. Nick Cox posted 9 points and Ben Maucher had 7.

Wauneta-Palisade and Wallace were neck and neck going into the second half, when the Broncos took a 13 point lead in the third quarter.

Trevor Ridlen contributed 20 points to the Bronco win.

Russell Ridlen followed with 19 points and Andrew Isom had 16.

Wiley Sowle was the top scorer for Wallace with 19 points

Wallace and Hayes Center battle for third place at 4:30 p.m. and Arapahoe and Wauneta-Palisade take the court for the title at 7:30 p.m.

The girls third-place game starts at 3 p.m. and the championship begins at 6 p.m. Saturday at Wallace.

OBERLIN -- Colby, Kan. defeated Decatur Community (Oberlin), 58-45, in boys basketball play here Friday.

Logan Fortin led the Oberlin Red Devils with 18 points. Leading scorer for Colby was Trey Barnett with 14 points.

Oberlin, now 4-12, hosts Norton Tuesday. Colby is now 3-13.

Megan Becker led the Eagles with 23 points.

Janae Perkins chipped in 16 points, followed by Mallory Murdoch with 13 points.

Southern Valley will be on the road Tuesday when it travels to Southwest.

"The girls played at great game, they stepped up when they needed to, we were down by 4 with 2 minutes left and the girls put the press on them and got some turnovers," said Cheylin coach Dennis Hengen.

Aubrey Kehlbeck led Cheylin with 22 points and 13 rebounds.
