McCook Bison wrestlers battle at Oberlin Invitational

Monday, January 16, 2006

OBERLIN -- The McCook High School varsity wrestling team traveled to Oberlin on Saturday for the Decatur Community Invitational tournament.

"We were hoping to send our full squad to this tournament but we have run into a string of bad luck with a few guys out of competition because of injuries," said McCook wrestling coach Nick Umscheid.

"For the guys who did compete I believe that we took another step up in improvement. It seems that every week we have a couple of wrestlers who consistently place for us and then there is always one or two wrestlers who usually surprise the coaching staff and put together a solid performance.

"If we could just get everybody performing at their best on one day I think it would be exciting to see what would happen. It was nice to see that at 130 pounds Ahren Hays put together a solid 4-1 performance.

"He is a wrestler that I have known and the rest of the coaching staff has known has had the potential to place at many of these tournaments and to see him do it is great. I hope this was the boost of confidence that he needed to take him to the next level."

Other wrestlers who placed on Saturday were Sam Frazier and Skyler Monzon.

"Skyler is turning himself into being a guy on our team who is becoming a regular placer on Saturdays," Umscheid said. "It's good to see that he has improved his wrestling skills and cut down on mental mistakes. He is seeing that hard work pay off for him this year.

"Sam Frazier once again placed in the top three. Sam came close to making it in the championship finals but was caught in a side roll and was pinned. It was good to see him come back strong and place third."
