KEARNEY and LINCOLN -- University of Nebraska-Kearney senior middle hitter Erin Gudmundson and Nebraska junior right side Christina Houghtelling have helped put the state of Nebraska in the volleyball records books once again.

On Nov. 30, Gudmundson (Kearney) was named the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Division II National Player of the Year.

This past weekend in Texas, Houghtelling (Cambridge) was named the AVCA Division I National Player of the Year.

This is just the third time in the history of the AVCA award that the same state produced the National Players of the Year in Division I and II in the same season.

Not surprisingly, the two previous cases involved players that all hailed from California.

In 1987, Tara Cross (Long Beach State) and Teee Williams (Hawaii) were named D1 Co-Players of the Year with Sheri Benson (California-Riverside) taking home D2 honors.

Two years earlier, Williams was the Division I Player of the Year with Angela Brinton (Cal State-Northridge) being the D2 Player of the Year.

Both the Lopers (38-2) and Huskers (33-2) finished the 2005 season as National runnersup.

Both squads also smashed attendance records in their respective Divisions -- the Huskers achieving Division I marks in Omaha and the Lopers setting Division II records at the Elite Eight.
