Bison wrestlers 2-0 in duals at Gothenburg
GOTHENBURG -- The McCook High School wrestling team posted a pair of dual victories at a triangular Tuesday night at Gothenburg.
The Bison defeated Gothenburg 43-31 and Cambridge 60-18.
"For our first dual competition of the year, I think that the team did an excellent job," said McCook wrestling coach Nick Umscheid.
"We had some underclassmen step in to fill some weight classes and they went out there and did their best to help us pick up two victories.
"It was also nice to see some of our more experienced veterans pick up two wins Tuesday night."
Alex Smith, Skyler Monzon, Ahren Hays, Austin Gessleman, David Cappel and Sam Frazier all went undefeated.
"I knew that the Gothenburg dual was going to be close just on how we finished last Saturday at the Holdrege Tournament," Umscheid said. "The Cambridge dual was just a matter of us having more spots filled than them. That is why the score looks so lopsided.
"Cambridge and Gothenburg both are programs just like us with lots of young men who have great potential in the next couple of years. I wouldn't be surprised to see these duals in the near future be very competitive." The Bison wrestling team can't take much of a break because it hosts the McCook 9/10 Open at 4 p.m. Friday.
"Many of our wrestlers will be competing on Friday," Umscheid said. "It would be a great opportunity to come out and see some great wrestling and support the team."
The Bison varsity team travels to Valentine on Saturday.
