James Edmund Finn

ATWOOD -- James Edmund Finn, the second child of Edmund J. and Ruth (Cole) Finn was born Feb. 21, 1945, in Salida, Colo. He departed this life on Dec. 11, 2005, in Denver, Colo., at the age of 60 years, 9 months and 20 days.

As a youth, he attended Catholic grade school and graduated from Salida High School in 1963.

James came to the Atwood community in 1967. Having just completed his bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Colorado, he began his duties as a teacher of social studies and government at Atwood High School. He also served as coach, sponsor of student council and an administrative assistant

Jim completed his master's degree from Fort Hays State University in 1985 and was appointed high school principal, from 1987 until 1991. He became superintendent of Atwood schools in 1990 and served until 2001. Jim went on to supervise student teachers for Fort Hays State University from 2001 until 2004.

Jim was united in marriage to Nita Gibbons in 1970 in Guymon, Okla. They have one son, Michael James Finn.

Memberships included Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus No. 3033 of Atwood and Elks Lodge No. 808 of Salida. He was also a member of statewide committees in the field of education. His active church involvement included parish and financial councils, CCD coordinator, teacher of religious education, men's choir and liturgy assignments of lector, eucharist minister and usher.

He enjoyed leadership workshops, was on the public relations committee for the Rawlins County Hospital, was a member of the advisory board for the Atwood Good Samaritan Center and started the Jim Finn Tree Project for Atwood's 125th anniversary celebration.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Marilyn Jelinek; and a brother-in-law, Woody Gibbons.

Those remaining to celebrate his life are his wife, Nita of the home and his son, Michael of West Lafayette, Ind.

Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood with Father Damian Richards as celebrant. A parish vigil and K of C rosary will be said today, 6 p.m., at the church.

A memorial has been established in his name, to be designated later.

Interment will be Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at Fairview Cemetery in Salida.
