Bison 8th grade

football team

gets 1st win

IMPERIAL -- The McCook Junior High School eighth grade football team recorded its first win of the season beating the Chase County-Imperial Shorthorns 47-0 Thursday at Imperial.

In the first quarter, Chad Stull scored twice with runs of 50 yards and 44 yards.

Deon Allen added another score from 2 yards out.

Later in the second, Tony Conroy and AJ Huffman combined on a fumble recovery leading to another score by Deon Allen making it 28-0 at halftime.

After a fumble recovery by Allen, Stull scored again from 36 yards out.

Andy Smith added another fumble recovery in the fourth quarter.

Nathan Morgan and Presten Ducharme both scored in the last period to make the final score 47-0.

Shane Wallen and Chance Pearson combined to go 5-for-7 on extra points.

"The kids played very well in all aspects of the game. The whole team worked together to shut out the Shorthorns," said coach Jeremy Yilk.

BENKELMAN -- The McCook High School sophomore volleyball team competed in the Dundy County Invite Sophomore Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

"Our first match was with Chase County," said McCook coach George Briggs. "We really did not respond well in this match. Our hitting proficiency was minus .381 and we only had one kill.

"We really did not pass serve very well and when we got some good swings, we hit the ball out of bounds or into the net. And, we did not pass the ball off of serve very well.

"In our two other matches, against Wauneta-Palisade and Dundy County, we played well for a series of points and, then, gave our opponents' points to get back into the matches."

The sophomores will be in action on Tuesday along with the junior varsity. Both squads will host Gothenburg, with the sophomore match starting at 5:30 p.m.

BENKELMAN -- The McCook High School freshman girls volleyball team went 2-1 on Saturday at the Dundy County quadrangular.

The Bison opened the morning against Chase County and lost 22-25, 20-25.

Athena Parde had four aces in the losing effort. Shelby Woitaszewski had five kills and Ashley Palic added four more. We played well at times, but just made too many errors.

In the second match, McCook downed Wauneta-Palisade in two sets, 25-23, 25-12.

The Bison had 12 aces. Ashley Palic led in kills with 7. The girls struggled a lit first set, but really came out and dominated in the second set.

In the final match, McCook topped Dundy County in three sets, 25-23, 23-25,15-7.

"We had 10 aces and 17 kills in a balanced attack," said McCook coach Jon Graff. "In the second set, the girls got down 13-20 and were able to battle back to tie the score at 22. That really gave us a confidence boost going into the third set. This was a good match for us, Dundy County was a quality opponent. The girls were focused and played hard.
