defeat Cozad,

COZAD -- The McCook High School junior varsity volleyball team defeated Cozad and Cambridge Tuesday night at Cozad.

In the first match, McCook defeated Cozad 25-21, 25-16.

McCook's leading server: Joanna Bryant 18-for-20, 6 aces.

McCook's leading hitter: Betsy Kohmetscher 9-for-10, 7 kills.

McCook's leading setter: Brianna Watkins 36-for-36, 12 assists.

"This match was a struggle in the first game as the score indicates," said McCook JV coach George Briggs. "Cozad served us very tough and also did some other things to get us really out of system.

"In fact, in the first game, McCook was behind by three and four points throughout the early portions of the game. We rallied at the end of the game to win the first set.

"In the second game, we seem to have developed a little more rhythm to the game. We also made adjustments to the things they were doing to us in the first game.

"Betsy Kohmetscher turned in a good performance hitting the ball and got us some key shots in the final moments of the second game.

McCook defeated Cambridge 25-16, 25-13.

McCook's leading server: Betsy Kohmetscher, 8-for-9, 3 aces.

McCook's leading hitter: Joanna Bryant 9-for-11, 9 kills.

McCook's leading setter: Brianna Watkins 21-for-22, 9 assists.

"I think the success and rhythm we had in the first match with Cozad carried over to the Cambridge match," Briggs said.

"We passed the ball off of serve better which allowed Brianna to get some good hittable balls to our hitters. We also served tougher in the Cambridge match.

"It was nice to see the junior varsity hit .304 against the Haymakers and .275 against the Trojans. I am not sure I have seen those kinds of numbers for hitting efficiency in a junior varsity triangular."

The junior varsity's season record is now 4-3. Their next match will be on Tuesday against Gothenburg. The sophomores will also play against Gothenburg.

The sophomores will travel Saturday to Dundy County to participate in the Dundy County Invite.

3-0 at Lexington

LEXINGTON -- The McCook Junior High School eighth grade volleyball team played at Lexington Tuesday, picking up three wins for three matches.

The A team won 25-17, 25-11. The B team won 25-16, 25-17. The C team won 25-19, 25-6, 19-25.

"Even though we won all three matches, I felt the girls didn't really play to their potential," said coach Colleen Olson. "We had a lot of missed serves and our passes just didn't get to our setters.

"We needed to speed up the tempo of the game, but that didn't seem to happen. The girls are improving and gaining confidence. Our next two matches are really going to put us to the test." The Bison will play Southwest on Oct. 3 and Ogallala on Oct. 10.
