CURTIS -- Winifred Mae Nutt Petersen, 89, died Saturday (Sept. 24, 2005) at Linden Court at North Platte. She was born on a farm south of Madrid, Neb., on June 13, 1916, the third oldest child of Walter and Mary Reutzel Nutt.

Mae attended school in Madrid, graduating as valedictorian of her class in 1934. After high school, she attended N.S.A. at Curtis, where she received her normal training. She then taught school south of Curtis for two years.

On June 17, 1936, she was married to Harry C. Petersen at Holyoke, Colo. They lived on a farm south of Curtis for 42 years, where they farmed together. In 1978, they retired and moved into Curtis. Harry preceded her in death December 1, 1989. To this union were born two sons and one daughter; Delmar, Dallas and Joan.

Mae was a lifetime member of the Congregational United Church of Christ and the Ladies Fellowship, of the church. She was also a member of Rebeccah's Lodge, Triple L Extension Club, Triple L 4-H Club Leader and a member of the Nebraska Cow Bells and Nebraska Wheat Growers.

She was a devoted mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. She and Harry enjoyed their many years together farming, going to bull sales and traveling. She loved her grandchildren dearly. She crocheted each one an afghan for high school graduation. Mae was a quiet lady who enjoyed her flowers, yard work, crossword puzzles, crocheting, reading and country music. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include two sons, Delmar and wife, Clara Petersen of Indianola and Dallas and wife, Joyce Petersen of Curtis; one daughter, Joan Werkmeister of North Platte; grandchildren, Dex Petersen and wife, Janelle of Aurora, Kay and husband, Rod Repenning of Bloomfield, Kim Brune of Rowlett, Texas, Chris Baker and wife, Jennifer of North Platte, Shane Baker and fiancee, Cathy Long of North Platte, Tonia and husband, Jeff Hlavac of Lincoln and Bert Petersen and wife, Deb of Curtis; great-grandchildren, Daniel and Brandon Petersen of Aurora, Kara, Joel and Michelle Repenning of Bloomfield, Tyler and Sierra Brune of Rowlett, Christian and Chase Baker of North Platte, Brina Lee Baker of North Platte, Rachel and Gavin Hlavac of Lincoln and Sammy and Dallas Petersen of Curtis; four sisters, Dorothy and husband, Arnold Sexson of Ogallala, Grace Godfrey of Sutherland, Betty Harris of Littleton, Colo., and Ethel Brott of Englewood, Colo.; one brother, Robert Nutt of North Platte; one sister-in-law, Elna Kibben of Curtis; step-children, Brad and Deb Bear and family of Hershey, Jeff and Kim Lenz and family of Maywood and Brett Bear and family of North Platte; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Nels and Dorthea Petersen; sister-in-law, Doris and husband, John McKinney; brother-in-law, Oliver Kibben of Curtis; a sister, Blanche and husband, John Hilferty; and a brother, Earl and wife, Mary Nutt.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, 2 p.m., at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Curtis, with the Rev. Jean Miller officiating. Interment will be in the Curtis Cemetery.

Visitation is today, until 9 p.m., at Blase-Wetzel Funeral Home in Curtis.
