Chase County spikers take McCook invite

Chase County's volleyball team took top honors Saturday in the annual McCook Invitational.

The Longhorns paired off with Southwest in two sets to take the win in the championship match.

Southwest won over McCook in three sets before taking on the Longhorns.

McCook won the third-place match over Oberlin.

Chelsey Quigley and Lisa Lord took turns leading Southwest in points and attacks.

Quigley tallied 17 points, 16 attacks, 11 digs and two aces and Lord made three aces and 19 attacks.

Cayla Skaritka followed Quigley totaling 15 points for the day.

Heather Teel racked up 51 assists.

Erica Clapp and Allison Smith led the Bison in blocks and set assists.

Smith had 18 kills, Lindsey McNutt had 8 aces and Lindsey Hazlitt had 26 digs against Cambridge and Southwest.

"We are very excited about the way the girls played, said coach Krystal Weber.

"We missed a couple serves in a row which is something we need to work on in practice, but we were satisfied and are starting to turn the corner."

Cambridge blasted Hayes Center and Gothenburg before taking on McCook.

Cambridge coach Judy Mousel said she was "pleased with her young teams tournament play."

Bailey Soucie and Shelby Schultz led the Trojans. Soucie was consistent in her assists, while Schultz led in kills and attacks.

Alysia Mowry led the team when it came to scoring, with nine points against Gothenburg and eight against McCook.

Oberlin had a challenging day.

"This is a different style of game and we had a terrible time adjusting, said Oberlin coach Pat Dorshorst. "We hesitated a lot. Every team we played had good athletes."

Heather Williams led the Red Devils in setting in two games. Lydia Karnopp was a top hitter and blocker along with Tricia Dorshorst and Emmie Pauls.

Kaitlyn Stapp shared passing and setting duties with Williams and Dorshorst.

Hayes Center's Dove Messersmith, Terra Bishop and Becca Gigax led the Cardinals in sets, blocks and hits.

Messersmith had 30 assists while Gigax had 15 kills and Bishop made 8 ace blocks and 25 attempts.
