ARAPAHOE -- Duane Aldon Gardner, 78, died Monday (Aug. 15, 2005) at the Cambridge Manor in Cambridge.

He was born Aug. 16, 1926, to George H. and Daisy E. (Morse) Gardner in Gosper County.

He served in the Army from December 1945 to February 1947 in Japan.

He married Joyce Lucas on June 3, 1948, at her parents' home in Holbrook. They farmed in Gosper County until moving to Arapahoe in June 1992.

He served on the Arapahoe Co-op Board and helped form the Edison Co-op. He received the Gosper County award for conservation and stewardship of the land. He was a member of the Edison American Legion Post No. 343, the Burton's Bend VFW Post No. 9357 and the Trinity Lutheran Church of Arapahoe.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Vernon Gardner.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce of Arapahoe; son, Randy Gardner and wife, Carla of Arapahoe; two daughters, Vicki and husband, Chuck Placker of Fort Collins, Colo., and Cheryl Severance of Beatrice; brother, Don Gardner and wife, Norma of Beaver City; sister-in-law, Marjorie Gardner of Arapahoe; and six grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday, 2 p.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Arapahoe with the Rev. Jeff W. Ernstmeyer officiating. Interment will be at the Arapahoe Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by Edison American Legion Post No. 343 and the Burton's Bend VFW Post No. 9357.

Viewing and visitation is today, until 8 p.m., at Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe.

Memorials are being accepted in his name at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Arapahoe and the Arapahoe Fire and Rescue squad.
