HAYES CENTER -- Alfred Henry Unger, 90, died Saturday (Aug. 13, 2005) at Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial.
He was born Aug. 9, 1915, to Fred Frederick and Eva Margaretha "Emma" (Tilgner) Unger in Red Willow County. He graduated from Red Willow County High School.
He married Darlene Fern Orman on Nov. 2, 1941, at her mother's home in Hayes County. The couple spent their years on farms in Red Willow County and Hayes County.
He was a farmer and cattleman. He worked for the ASCS and was an adjuster and field man for Federal Crop Insurance Corporation for 25 years.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in McCook, where he performed various leadership roles.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Melanie Unger; five sisters, Emma Unger, Elizabeth Unger, Clara Baumbach, Pauline Tauber and Lydia Ackerman; and four brothers, Gus Unger, Walter Unger, Herman Unger and Charley Unger.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Unger of Hayes Center; four sons, Fred Unger and wife, Lea of Hayes Center, Don Unger and wife, Karen of Fort Collins, Colo., Jack Unger and wife, Jerrilynne of McKinney, Texas, and Jerry Unger and wife, Beverly of Hayes Center; one daughter, Nancy and husband, Bill Jennett of Lincoln; two sisters, Alma Ackerman of McCook and Loraine Groothius of Ogden, Utah; five sisters-in-law, Frances Unger of McCook, Lillian Orman of Riverside, Calif., Ruth Wagner of Ventura, Calif., Lorraine Morosic of McCook and Juanita Orman of Santa Ana, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were today, 2 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in White. The Rev. Steven Neyhart officiated. Interment was in the White Cemetery.
Memorials are being accepted in his name at the St. John's Lutheran Church in White, the Trinity Lutheran Church in McCook or the Hayes County Ambulance Fund.
