HOLDREGE -- Henry Jacob Schaefer, 84, died Friday (Aug. 12, 2005) at the Holdrege Memorial Homes.
He was born Dec. 17, 1920, to Conrad and Anna (Adolph) Schaefer in Shields, N.D. The family moved to Culbertson in 1927. He graduated from Culbertson High School in 1940.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served in the South Pacific until his discharge in 1946.
He married Evelyn Marie Willmann on Aug. 30, 1940.
He was employed as a meat market manager with Safeway Stores Inc. for 36 years. He worked at various locations including McCook, Kearney, Ord and Holdrege. He retired in 1983, following the closing of Safeway's Omaha division.
He was a member of the VFW, the Kiwanis Club, several philatelic societies and the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege, serving in many offices.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn in 1999; his parents; son, Douglas; three brothers, Alex Schaefer, Fred Schaefer and Conrad Schaefer; two half-brothers, the Rev. David Kreitzer and John Kreitzer.
Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Spence and husband, Michael of Carmel, Ind., and Claudia Hasselquist and husband, Keith of Boise, Idaho; a sister, Esther Carroll and husband, Larry of Brighton, Colo., two sisters-in-law, Ila Schaefer of Jerome, Idaho, and Jo Schaefer of Washington; four grandsons; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Services will be Tuesday, 11 a.m., at the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege with the Rev. Kenton Birtell officiating. Interment will be in the Culbertson Cemetery in Culbertson, 2:30 p.m.
Visitation will be Monday, 1-9 p.m., at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege with a family greeting from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Memorials are being accepted in his name at the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege.
The Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege is in charge of arrangements.
