Farmstead fire

Billie Cole/McCook Daily Gazette

The basement of the John Coyle farm home and charred vehicles remain after a fire destroyed the farmstead south of Maywood Saturday afternoon. One-hundred-plus temperatures and 30-mile-an-hour winds fanned the flames. Smoke from the blaze could be seen as far away as Indianola and Palisade. Firefighters battled the blaze into the evening, and Maywood's firefighters checked hot spots Sunday. Firefighters from Maywood/Wellfleet, Curtis, Eustis, Indianola, Beaver Valley, Danbury, Lebanon, McCook and the Red Willow Western doused the flames with water and foam. Dueland Farms and area farmers assisted in hauling water. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
