INDIANAPOLIS -- The Bison Nebraska Red boys basketball team, featuring Cambridge High School senior-to-be Waid Vontz, split their first two games at Hoosier Shootout in Indianapolis Wednesday.

Bison Nebraska Red is the only Nebraska team playing in this tournament.

The Bison Red defeated the Cincinnati Royals 96-83 and lost to the Spiece (Ind.) Gym Rats 74-63. The Bison Red squad has a 10-3 record.

Vontz scored 9 points in the win over Cincinnati and 10 in the loss to Spiece.

In the Cincinnati win, Mitch Carstens' 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in regulation sent the game to overtime and Mitch Albers' off-balance, banked 3-pointer at the first overtime buzzer gave Bison Red another chance.

Matt Hill scored six points in the second overtime and Albers was 4-for-4 from the free throw line as Bison Red pulled away.

Carstens was 5-for-7 from 3-point range. Bison Red made 18 of 24 free throws in the two overtime periods.

Despite shooting 50 percent from the field, Bison Red failed to overcome 21 turnovers and 30 per cent free throw shooting against Spiece.

Lincoln Southeast's Matt Hill was 5-for-7 from the field and pulled down eight rebounds.

Bison Red held a 51-49 lead with 2:34 left in the third period, but Spiece never trailed again after a 13-2 run.
