Midgets on short end of upsets

OVERTON -- To play to the maximum potential on a consistent basis can be a difficult accomplishment for many ball clubs. The McCook Midgets experienced that on Tuesday night at Overton, as they cruised to a 16-8 victory and were handed a 17-2 defeat.

In the opener, Brady Chancellor and Adam Kruger teamed up to only give up eight runs. Both pitchers only struck out two batters each, but the error free defense backed them up in the field.

"Both of our pitchers threw very well, especially for throwing against older opponents," head coach Mike Broomfield said.

Broomfield said the game kept on going back and forth until McCook could establish a lead for good.

"We jumped up two runs and then they came back. After we went back and forth, we finally stayed up for good. They put a two hour time limit on the game, so we ended up winning in six innings," he said.

Brady Chancellor, Shane Wallen and Adam Kruger each had two hits each as McCook hit the ball all over the field in the opener.

"Everyone hit the ball very well Tuesday night. It was just that some of them were hit in the right spot," Broomfield said.

In the second game, McCook searched through many different pitchers. Austin Larson started the game and was followed by Jeff Lorentz, Adam Kruger and Cody Broomfield.

"Overton was just hitting the ball really hard the second game. We only committed three errors, so most of their runs were coming off of hits and walks," Broomfield said.

The Midgets lost Joe Vertrowski in the second game as he broke his arm on defense. A runner ran into his arm as he was stretching for a throw.

McCook had a handful of players with one hit. They left quite a few runners on base according to Broomfield.

"We had the bases loaded once and couldn‚t score anyone. They put in a pretty good pitcher who threw very hard and was wild at some points. Three of our players got hit in the head, so it was a rough game," he said.

The McCook Midgets will be hosting their own tournament starting Saturday. They will open up with Gothenburg at 9 a.m. at the Jaycee Sports Complex.

Ogallala, Hayes Center, Paxton, Colo., and Yuma, Colo., will also be participating in the tournament.
