FCB Juniors lose to experienced Imperial club

Friday, June 3, 2005

IMPERIAL -- Alex Sharp, Imperial's ace pitcher, dominated the American Legion Juniors game Thursday night in Imperial.

The Juniors dropped to 4-4.

Sharp got the victory on the mound with a 7-1 win and had two doubles.

"Imperial's Juniors team is loaded up -- that's for sure. Since they don't have a Seniors program, they have some good players on the Juniors level," coach Steve Cochran said.

One aspect of the game Cochran was very pleased about was the Juniors' defense, which showed tremendous improvement from Wednesday.

"Our guys played the ball well, but Imperial hit the ball very well too, at their home park by hitting some holes. Last night our bats didn't show up, but our defense did," Cochran said.

Dillion Gotl started on the hill and went six innings. Andrew Reitz finished the game.

"We threw a couple of younger guys to get them some more experience. We want to deepen our pitching staff so when we go to tournament play, some of our younger kids can step up," Cochran said.

First Central Bank could not push runs across when they were in scoring position.

"One time we had runners on second and third with no outs, and we couldn't get a run across the plate. If we are unable to get a run across in this situation, it makes things very difficult," Cochran said.

FCB will play in their first tournament this weekend at Lexington on Saturday and Sunday.

The Juniors will play Sidney at 3 p.m. and Ogallala at 5 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, they will play Hickman-Norris at 9 a.m.

The Juniors will play Overton at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Jaycee Sports Complex.

"I will have a chance to look at some more guys this weekend, and hopefully we can find a solid group to win some games," Cochran said.
