CAMBRIDGE -- Loyd E. Nicholson, 99, died Tuesday (May 31, 2005), at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Arapahoe.

He was born May 23, 1906, to Benjamin and Bertha (Best) Nicholson in the Sherman Precinct of Wilsonville. He spent his youth in this area and graduated in 1925.

He taught school in Frontier County for eight years, going to Kearney State Teachers College in the summer. In 1934, he was elected county clerk of Frontier County and served two terms.

On May 15, 1937, he married Violet Hansen at Stockville. They had three children: Frank Joy, who died at birth, Loyeen Jo and Kathryn Jean.

After returning to Cambridge from Denver, Loyd opened a men's clothing store located in front of the locker plant in 1946. In 1951, a new store was built and he operated Loyd's Clothing until he retired in 1975.

He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, served on the school board and as a director for the Parkside Manor. In 2002, he received his 60 year pin from the Masonic Lodge and was a member of the Methodist Church for 86 years. For the past 10 years he has resided at the Good Samaritan Home in Arapahoe.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Violet, on Oct. 19, 1982. He met and married Oneta Cecil from Imperial the following year. She preceded him in death on Oct. 27, 1987.

He is survived by one brother, Orville and wife Rae of Howe, Idaho; one sister, Phyllis Phillips of Commerce City, Colo.; two daughters, Kathryn and husband Brad Huddleston of Lincoln, and Loyeen and husband Bill Woodruff of Woodridge, Ill.; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at the Trinity Methodist Church in Cambridge with the Rev. David Rowe officiating. Interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Cambridge.
