KEARNEY -- Derrick M. Deets, 25, died Friday, May 6, 2005, at home in Kearney of liver cancer. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at First Lutheran Church in Kearney with the Rev. Mark Price officiating. Burial will be at the Kearney Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the O'Brien -Straatmann - Apfel Funeral Home and for one hour before the service at the church. Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Hospice. Derrick was born April 2, 1980, in San Jose, Costa Rica to Dona Gutierrez and was given the birth name of Geovanny Sanchez Gutierrez. Derrick came to the United States when he was 10 years old. When he moved to Kearney at the age of 12 he was given the name of Derrick Deets. Derrick graduated from Kearney High School in May 1999. He enjoyed playing soccer and football for Kearney High. Derrick attended First Lutheran Church where he was active in the church youth group. He went with the youth group to many of the mission trips. After graduation, Derrick attended college at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. In March 2003 he moved to Phoenix. He returned to Kearney in December 2004, due to his illness.

Derrick was surrounded by many special people in his life and he enjoyed spending time with them up until his death.

Survivors include Derrick's birth mother and brother Kenneth of San Jose, Costa Rica, sister, DeeAnna of Lincoln, and brother, Will of Kearney. Additional survivors include Derrick's foster parents, Tom and Jill Nickerson and their children Holli and Tyson of Kearney and special friend, Cha Cha Espinosa of Phoenix. Extended family includes foster grandparents Dave and Evelynn Nickerson, Joye Thompson, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
