WICKENBURG, Ariz. -- Dr. Gerhardt LeRoy Ortgiesen, 91, died Wednesday (April 20, 2005) in Wickenburg, Ariz.
He was born May 24, 1913, to George and Jennie (Harms) Ortgiesen. He received his bachelor of science degree from Midland College and a master of arts degree and doctorate from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
On Aug. 18, 1939, he married Muriel G. Colton. The couple moved to Culbertson where he was employed as principal of the Culbertson School system. He became superintendent of the Culbertson Schools and remained until 1946. He was elected to the Nebraska State Board of Education as an assistant commissioner of education. As commissioner he was sent to Japan, Okinawa, Guam and the Phillipines to do accreditation for U.S. Military Schools. He also published articles for the school system. The couple retired in 1978. They moved to Wickenburg in 1991.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, LaVern.
Survivors include his wife, Muriel; sister-in-law, Francis Miller of Wickenburg; nieces and nephews.
Services are Tuesday, 11 a. m., at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln with visitation one hour prior to services.
