Bison boys track squad dominates at Broken Bow

Monday, April 11, 2005

BROKEN BOW -- The McCook High School boys track team dominated the Broken Bow Invitational Friday afternoon.

The Bison boys scored 170.5 points, easily outdistancing second-place Gothenburg, which scored 96 points.

Ord finished third with 77, followed by Central City 55.5, Cozad 47, Broken Bow 40 and Valentine 40.

The McCook girls track team placed fourth with 66 points. Gothenburg won the girls title with 98 points, edging out Central City with 95 and Holdrege with 90.

"I think that our superior depth and the fact that our athletes stayed so mentally tough under adverse weather conditions were the biggest factors contributing to our big margin of victory at the Broken Bow Invitational last Friday," said McCook boys track coach John Gumb.

"We won all three relays and I can't remember the last time we did that at an invitational rrack meet. We also placed more than one athlete in nine of the 14 individual events, led by a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 meter dash which really put the meet away for us."

Junior Brendan Liess had another outstanding day with three gold medals, including the "Kent McCloughan Award" which goes to the winner of the 200 meter dash every year in Broken Bow. This was the third consecutive year that Liess has won this award.

John Swanhorst achieved two Career Bests. His 40.5 second time in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles was good enough to nip Zack Frink of Ord at the tape.

Swanhorst also ran 15.1 in the 110-meter high hurdles to finish second. Jeremy Young was also clocked in 15.1 in the same race.

"These are career best times for both of these guys in this event," Gumb said.

Josh Cherry and Shawn McMurtrey had season-best times in finishing 1-2 in the 1600-meter run on a day where improving your times in races all the way around the track was a next to impossible task because of the wind, Gumb said.

Senior Zach Volquardsen finished fifth in the discus with a career-best throw of 144 feet, 8 inches. Senior Ted Chancellor was third in the triple jump with a personal-best effort of 39-9.

The McCook girls were paced by Kim Miller, who threw the discus 129 feet to set a personal record and moved to third on the MHS track charts.

Ashley Huffman was fourth in the discus with a personal record throw of 115 feet. Miller was also third in the shot put at 36-10.

Katherine Morell finished first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.9 seconds and also posted a personal record and MHS Top 10 mark.

Morell was also second in the 200 (27.0) and triple jump (33-4) and joined Amy Beckenhauer, Brianna Ward and Austin Wilson to place second in the 4x100 relay. They were clocked at 53.3 seconds.

"The McCook girls performed well and were competitive in most events," said McCook girls track coach Steve Clapp. "Most athletes continued to improve under adverse weather conditions."

Next action for the McCook varsity boys and girls will be next Saturday at the Zorn Invitational in Gothenburg. The junior varsity teams will be in action the same day at the Medicine Valley meet at Arapahoe.
