IMPERIAL -- Violet May (Corey) Beard, 83, died Saturday (March 12, 2005) at the Imperial Manor Nursing Home in Imperial.

She was born Aug. 4, 1921, to Roy and Sylvia Corey at the family home north of Wauneta. She attended country school and high school in Casper, Wyo.

On Sept. 14, 1941, she married Clifford Oath Beard. They lived in Venango and south of Champion before settling in Hayes Center where she worked at Nelms Grocery Store for a time. She also drove the school bus for over 30 years. In 1980 they retired and moved to Enders where she continued to drive the school bus.

She was president of the Hayes County Historical Society for many years. She was also a member of the Enders Church of the Brethren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clifford in 2000; brothers, Frank, Lester and Don; and sister, Mary.

Survivors include her daughters, Virginia Wilson and husband, Ken of Omaha and Kaye Jahn and special friend, Sandy Rufenacht of Denver, Colo.; sons, Ron Beard and wife, Shelly of Omaha and John Beard and wife, Sandi of Mitchell; brothers, Walt Corey and wife, Gayle, Nick Corey and wife, Coleta; sister, Alice Corey; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services are today, 10 a.m. (MST), at the Church of the Brethren in Enders with the Rev. Francis Baker officiating. Interment will be in the Green Lawn Cemetery in Lamar.

A memorial has been established to the Nebraska Historical Society.
