SELDEN, Kan. -- Donald J. Ashley, 84, died Saturday (March 5, 2005) at Decatur County Hospital in Oberlin.
He was born Dec. 16, 1920, to James and Ina (Brantley) Ashley northwest of Selden. He was raised near Selden and attended country school. He graduated from Selden High School and attended Fort Hays State College.
He joined the Army.
On Dec. 20, 1941, he married Elma Cramer in Norton, Kan. He was a farmer.
He was a member of the Selden United Methodist Church, Selden American Legion Post No. 321, Masons, Eastern Star, Shriners, ASCS Committee, Selden School Board, Sunday School Superintendent, 4-H Leader and the Northwest Kansas Groundwater Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ercle and Eston Ashley; and one sister, Maria Verhhoeff.
Survivors include his wife, Elma Ashley of Oberlin; two sons, Larry Ashley and wife, Linda of Loveland, Colo., and Kent Ashley and wife, Tina of Selden; daughter, Karen and husband, Frank Bennett in Oberlin; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services are Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Selden with the Rev. Doug Hasty officiating. Interment will be in Selden with military rites provided by Selden American Legion.
Visitation is Tuesday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., and Wednesday, 8 a.m., until service time.
