HERNDON -- Francis W. Escher, 84, died Friday (Feb. 25, 2005) in Topeka, Kan.
He was born Sept. 17, 1920, to Louis and Rosa Barenberg Escher. He was raised in Herndon and attended Catholic grade school and high school. He spent a year at Creighton University in Omaha.
He joined the Marine Corps in May 1942. He spent his war years with the 2nd Marine Division in the South Pacific. After the war he returned to Herndon.
On Aug. 12, 1947, he married Aurelia Marintzer at St. Mary's Church. He co-owned the Herndon Cash Store with his father until 1967, when he became Postmaster, a position he had until his retirement in 1988.
Survivors include his wife, Aurelia; his children, Gary and wife, Linda of Topeka, Kan., Mary Jo Erickson and husband, Bruce of Fullerton, Calif., Dan and wife, Betty of Topeka, Kan., Ann Palmer and husband, Tom of Sabeth, Kan., and Mitch and wife, Susan of Lee's Summit, Mo.; a brother, Loren of Hays, Kan.; a sister, Rosemary Escher Bates of Aurora, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial is Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church in Herndon with the Rev. Damian Richards officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
A parish vigil and Knights of Columbus Rosary is Tuesday, 7 p.m., at the church.
Visitation is Tuesday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at Williams Funeral Home in Atwood and after 6 p.m., at the church in Herndon.
Memorials may be given in his name to the St. Mary's Church in Herndon.
