LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. -- Viola Louise Schaffert, 94, died Feb. 18, 2005, at a care facility in Lake Oswego, Ore., where she had been living since undergoing a series of strokes.
She was born Sept. 29, 1910, on the family farm in Red Willow County southeast of McCook in the Ash Creek Community. She was the second of five children born to William and Katherine "Katie" (Eberhard) Wall.
She was married to Louis Schaffert on June 23, 1931. They lived on a farm southeast of Bartley where their only child, DeLoris, was born and where Louis and Viola resided until they moved to Cambridge in 1951. Because of health issues Louis and Viola moved to Lincoln. Louis died Dec. 13, 1984. Viola moved to Oregon in 1994 to be near her family. She lived with them until she experienced the strokes and it became necessary for her to live at a care facility.
She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church southwest of Bartley and also St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Cambridge. She was the oldest member of her church family at Living Savior Lutheran Church in Tualatin, Ore.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; her parents; her sister, Esther Croughan on Feb. 17, 1987; her brothers, Edwin Nov. 9, 1979, Alfred on Feb. 17, 1992, and Harold Feb. 12, 1996; and her son-in-law, Harold "Jiggs" Summers on Nov. 30, 2004.
Survivors include her daughter, DeLoris; a grandson; and her sister-in-law, Fern Wall of Denver, Colo..
Services will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cambridge, at 1:30 p.m., Friday. Private interment services will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery at Bartley.
