Cambridge, Arapahoe boys squads to play in D1-11 sub-district finale

Cambridge and Arapahoe will meet in the finals of the Nebraska Class D1-11 boys sub-district tournament Thursday at the McCook High School gymnasium.

Game time is 7:45 p.m.

The winner advances to the district finals against the winner of the Class D1-12 sub-district title game featuring Wauneta-Palisade and Leyton.

Cambridge and Arapahoe set up their showdown by posting blowout wins Tuesday.

Cambridge (16-7) blasted Elwood 90-48 and Arapahoe pounded Medicine Valley 79-49.

The Cambridge boys led at halftime against Elwood 46-18 and scored 20-plus points in each quarter.

Anthony Lytle led the Trojans with 27 points, followed by Waid Vontz with 24. Brett Cribelli, Brian Ballou and Daron Chambers each scored 8.

The Trojans fired in 10 3-pointers and hit 12-of-13 free throws. They outrebounded the Pirates 30-26, led by Vontz with 9 and Lytle 7.

Trenton Kotschwar led the Pirates with 16 points. Mark Weissert and Stephen Schutz added 8 each.

Elwood made 8-of-12 free throws.

CHAPPEL -- No. 1 seed Arapahoe pounded Medicine Valley in the D1-12 semifinal round Tuesday 79-49.

Arapahoe came out on fire putting up 36 first quarter points and put the game away early.

Mike Cacy, Tony Braithwait, and Blake Maaske led the Warriors in scoring with 16 points each.

Medicine Valley was led in scoring by Joe Warneke with 15, Jordan Wilcox with 11 and Josh Nutt with 10.

SUTHERLAND -- Hayes Center took one step closer to the state playoffs by defeating Paxton in the D2-10 sub-district semi finals 48-43.

Hayes Center coach Mark Frecks said of his teams win, "We did an excellent job on defense, and on offense we got the ball inside when we needed too. Overall, it was an excellent team effort."

Hayes Center was led in scoring by Curtis Olson and Joseph Frecks with 11 each. Brandt Hagan added 10.

Brian Rhodes scored 29 points for Paxton.

Hayes Center will play Wallace in the sub district finals on Thursday.

CHAPPEL -- Wauneta-Palisade posted the blow out of the year in its sub-district semi final game over Crawford 104-34.

The Broncos had 10 players score, including five in double figures led by Andrew Isom with 25 points, Russell Ridlen with 23, Brad Licht with 13, Tyler Riener with 11 and Trevor Ridlen with 10.

Wauneta-Palisade will play Leyton in the finals on Thursday.

ALLIANCE -- Chase County faced a good Chadron team in the C1-12 sub district semi finals on Tuesday and lost in a close game 67-62.

"Chadron hit some key shots early in the game to get us down," said Chase County boys coach Rick Titus. "We were down by 18 in the third, got it back to 13 by the start of the fourth, and got it down to 5 within a 3 minute period.

"We were forced to foul late and they shot 11 of 13 from the free throw line down the stretch. Our kids never gave up and competed well down to the end."

Aaron Fuehrer led the Longhorns in scoring with 19 points, followed by Trey Boggs with 12 and Joey Smith with 11.

OBERLIN -- The Oberlin boys basketball team hosted Phillipsburg on Tuesday and lost 58-50.

Phillipsburg jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the first quarter.

Oberlin was led in scoring by Lance Fortin with 18, and Andy Inman with 11.

Oberlin fell to 8-12.
