CURTIS -- Godfrey S. Nielsen, 89 of Curtis, died Thursday (Feb. 10, 2005) at Sunset Haven Nursing Home in Curtis.

He was born north of Curtis on Sept. 1, 1915, to Niels and Regina Jensen Nielsen. He attended Ash Grove School west of Wellfleet. In the early 1930's he moved with his parents to a farm between Curtis and Stockville.

He entered the U.S. Army on Oct. 16, 1941, and served until Nov. 23, 1944.

He married Thelma Dick on Feb. 2, 1952, in Maywood. He farmed for many years southeast of Curtis and later west of Curtis. His wife Thelma preceded him in death on Jan. 22, 2001.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Curtis, the American Legion Post No. 95, P.P.O.E. of McCook, and had served on the local U.S.D.A. Board, the Medicine Valley Watershed Board and was a past board member of the Middle Republican Natural Resource District.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife Thelma; two brothers, Arthur and Vern; and a sister, Carrie Newtson.

Survivors include one sister, Leola Mercer of Ventura, Calif.

Funeral services are Tuesday, 10 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Curtis with Rev. Kevin Burkhardt officiating.

Burial is in the Curtis Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post No. 95 of Curtis.

Visitation is Sunday 1-5 p.m., and Monday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Blase-Wetzel Funeral Home in Curtis. Memorials may go to donor's choice.
