GRETNA -- Douglas P. Hinton, 40, died at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.

He was born in Holbrook on Feb. 13, 1964, to Ivan "Ike" and Luella A. (Sayer) Hinton. He graduated from Holbrook High School in 1982. He played football, basketball and ran track. He received a basketball scholarship to Doane College in Crete but sustained an injury that ended his basketball college career. Doug then attended McCook Community College, Kearney State and received his Bachelor's degree from UNO in December of 1990.

He was united in marriage to Darla Schmidt in Gretna on March 24, 1990. The couple had moved to West Virginia in 1993 but returned to Nebraska in 1996. He had been employed as a mortgage lender for several years. He had just recently passed his commercial insurance licensure with the State of Nebraska and was employed by Sentry Insurance in Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and a niece, Sabrina Schmidt.

Survivors include his wife, Darla; 3 sons,Corey, Cobe, Casey, all of Gretna; his parents, Ike and Luella Hinton of Cambridge; one sister, Rebecca and husband, Rob Hinton of Texas; in-laws, Orville and Betty Schmidt of Cozad; one uncle, Mike and wife, Teri Sayer of Gothenburg.

Funeral services are Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Lockenour-Jones Mortuary in Cambridge with Raymond Durner officiating. Interment will be in the Holbrook Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left in his name at the mortuary.
