Bison boys, girls fall at Ogallala

OGALLALA -- The McCook High School boys basketball team lost at Ogallala 71-55 Friday night.

The Bison trailed at halftime by 11 points.

Ogallala got hot from 3-point range in the first half and the Bison had to play catch-up.

Brendan Liess led the Bison with 13 points. Tonly Purvis added 8, Brandon Crick 7, Jeremy Young 7 and Zach Volquardsen 6.

Joel Pelster led the Indians with 23 points. Wade Palmer tallied 14.

"We knew they had the capability to do that (shoot 3-pointers well)," said McCook boys coach Steve Nicholson. "We weren't getting of ball screens well. I thought we did a better job of that in the second half. We gave a good effort in three quarters, but we had a meltdown in the second quarter."

The Bison host Gothenburg at 5 p.m. Saturday at the MHS gym.

No score was available for the McCook-Ogallala junior varsity boys game.

The Bison JV hosts Gothenburg at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Bison boys will play three games at home next weekend in the East-West Shootout.

McCook will host Scottsbluff Thursday, Gering Friday and Alliance Saturday.

Game times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday.

The JV boys play at 5:45 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 3:15 p.m. Saturday.

Ogallala girls 51,

OGALLALA -- The McCook Bison varsity girls basketball teamplayed a strong quarter-and-a-half, but then piled up the fouls in a 51-44 loss Friday night at Ogallala.

Three Bison girls fouled out of the contest, which took about tw hours to play.

The Bison were paced by their junior post tandem of Jillian Bryant and Allison Smith.

Bryant scored 22 points for the second straight game and pulled down 16 rebounds. She missed a "triple-double" by three, dishing off 7 assists, and had 2 steals.

Smith contributed 14 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

Andrea Soden scored 2 points, pulled down 5 boards and handed out 4 assists.

Taryn Placzek had 4 points and 2 rebounds. Katherine Morell had 2 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.

Natalie Brooks did not score, but added 6 rebounds from the guard position.

The Bison outrebounded Ogallala 37-29.

Amber Max led the Indians with 15 points. Candace Ewert added 12 and Lacey Thieler 11. Lacey Most tallied 7.

"We started doing things that weren't smart and started throwing the ball away," said McCook girls coach Barry Schaeffer. "We didn't play smart with foul trouble. I felt we hurt ourselves more than Ogallala beat us.

"Jillian kept us in the game in the first half. Allison Smith gave her some help in second half and then got in foul trouble. Our guards got in foul trouble. We all could have done a better job -- coach included. We have three tough games next week. We better play smarter basketbal."

The McCook girls now have lost two straight games after posting a four-game win streak. McCook's record is 5-15.

The Bison girls will play three road games next weekend in the East-West Shootout.

McCook will play at Scottsbluff Thursday, Gering Friday and Alliance Saturday. Game times are 7:30 p.m. MT Thursday and Friday and 5 p.m. MT Saturday.

OGALLALA -- The McCook Bison junior varsity girls basketball team outscored Ogallala 15-9 in the fourth quarter and defeated the Indians 39-33 Friday night at Ogallala.

Taryn Placzek scored 12 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Lindsey McNutt had 9 points and 9 rebounds.

Betsy Kohmetscher added 8 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

Sam Brown and Amy Beckenhauer each scored 4 points. Rebecca Rawlings and Kala Smalley each scored 1.

Rawlings had 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals.

McCook outrebounded Ogallala 31-24.

Dani Damm led the Indians with 12 points.

Southern Valley boys 47,

Southwest 35

OXFORD -- The No. 10 ranked Southern Valley boys hosted Southwest Friday night and got the 12 point victory 47-35.

Southwest played Southern valley tough in the first half and led going into halftime, but Southernvalley came out of the locker room in the second half and turned up the defense holding Southwest to just 10 second half points.

The Eagles defensive performance was enough to come back and tke the win.

Andrew Winscot led the Eagles in scoring with 17, Mike Powell added 13, and Gaven Fults chipped in 11.

Southwest was led by Mason Nelms with 15 while Steve Salas added 11.

Southern Valley improves its record to 11-5 and travels to Dundy County Feb. 11 for its next contest.

Southwest hosts Hayes Center Feb. 11 for its next game.

OXFORD -- Southern Valley continued on its winning ways as the girls basketball team defeated the Southwest Roughriders Friday night 49-37.

Southern Valley was able to put on the defensive clamps in the second quarter limiting Southwest to just 3 points while scoring 16 of its own.

Southern Valley also held Southwest to a team field goal percentage of 29 percent for the game.

Besides the second quarter, the game was played evenly, but Southwest could never overcome the second quarter deficit and lose the game by 12 points.

Janae Perkins led the way for the Eagles putting up 14 points and grabbing 3 rebounds.

Savannah Noyes had a terrific night in the losing effort for Southwest, scoring 23 points and pulling down 7 rebounds.

Southern Valley travels to Dundy County for its next contest on Feb. 11. Southwest hosts Hayes Center Feb. 11 for its next game.

HAYES CENTER -- The Hayes Center boys hosted Wallace,the Omaha-World Herald's No. 5 ranked team, and was looking to pull the upset.

Despite having three players in double figures for scoring, the Cardinals got off to a slow start and lost to Wallace, 59 to 49.

Hayes Center was led in scoring by Joseph Frecks with 12 points.

Brandt Hagan followed with 11 points and Ben Maucher had 10 points for Hayes Center.

Wiley Sowle led all scorers with 17 points for Wallace.

Andy Coppersmith and Daniel Swanson each had 12 points for the visitors.

Hayes Center outrebounded Wallace 30-28.

Curtis Olson pulled down 11 rebounds and Ben Maucher followed with 10 for Hayes Center.

HAYES CENTER -- In a see-saw battle, the Hayes Center girls defeated Wallace in overtime Friday night by the score of 51 to 45.

Knotted at 37 at the end of regulation, Hayes Center outscored Wallace 14-8 in the overtime frame.

"The girls played a great game. Offensively we had more girls step up and score some big points," said Hayes Center coach Krystal Sauser.

"Defensively, the girls adjusted to Wallace's offense and kept them from scoring."

Amy Cox led Hayes Center with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals.

Mary Gohl and Randi Steele chipped in 9 points each for the Cardinals.

Maywood 53

TRENTON -- Hitchcock County overcame 15 turnovers and got good play from its bench as it went on to defeat Maywood Friday night 74-53.

Hitchcock County outrebounded Maywood 40-19.

"This was a good all around game for our team," said coach Mike Tines of Hitchcock County. "We rebounded well and knocked down open shots.

"Our bench stepped up again and scored 43 of our 74 points. I was very proud of the team's effort."

Chancy Carlson of Hitchcock County led all scorers with 20. C. Hazen led Maywood with 16 points.

TRENTON -- The Maywood Tigers visited Trenton in girls' hoop action Friday night and came away with the win over Hitchcock County, 49- 30.

A 2-point third quarter spelled doom for the Falcons.

Alyssa Hazen of Maywood led all scorers with 15 points.

Melanie Kellick of Hitchcock County poured in 10 points for the Falcons.

"We played hard, but couldn't get the ball to go down," said Coach Doug Newcomb of Hitchcock County.

The Hitchcock County girls' team hosts Arapahoe tonight at Trenton.
