McCook boys, girls fall in Colby tourney openers

COLBY -- The McCook boys squared off against an undefeated Liberal last night and could not overcome a 23-point performance by Liberal's Antonio Hansen.

Liberal defeated McCook 77-53.

McCook had a good shooting night, shooting 46 percent from the field, but turned the ball over allowing Liberal 33 points off of those turnovers.

McCook went into halftime down 24-37 and could not comeback in the second half despite winning the third quarter.

Zack Volquardsen led the Bison in scoring and rebounds, scoring 13 and grabbing 7 boards. Zack was also proficcent from the field hitting 5 of 8 from the field.

Brandon Liess was the only other double digit scorer pitching in 10 points and 4 rebounds.

Hansen also led Liberal in rebounds with 6.

Other double figure scorers were Robert Tibbetts with 15, Chris Hill with 14, and Tyler Westerman with 12.

McCook faces Ulysses at 4:45 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

Liberal improved its record to 9-0 and moves on to face Goodland.

Ponca City girls 61,

COLBY -- The McCook girls drew Ponca City in their first round game and walked out with 61-36 loss.

McCook turned the ball over 26 times and could not overcome those mistakes.

"We played a pretty good team tonight, and stayed close for 2 1/2 quarters," said McCook girls coach Barry Schaeffer.

"Turnovers were the key, we had a total of 26 compared to their 14. the difference in turnovers is the difference in the score. We need to take better care of the baqll tonight in order to give ourselves a chance to win the game.

"The girls once again gave a good effort and we had some kids play well off the bench, we just need to put it all together and get a win."

The Bison won the rebounding battle and shot an impressive 50 percent from the field but still could not get the win, losing the game 61-36.

Allison Smith shot 3 of 5 from the floor and led McCook in scoring with 12. She was the lone Bison in double figures.

Ponca City was led in scoring by Crystal Moore who scored 17 and was followed by Teara Lewis who scored 12, and Crystal Beattle scored 10.

McCook will play Ulysses at 3 p.m. in the consolation bracket. Ponca City plays Goodland in the semifinals.

OBERLIN -- Oberlin faced off against Resurrection Christian last night in its first round game.

Both teams came into the game with similar records, Resurrection Christian had a record of 4-3 and Oberlin 4-4.

Both teams came out hot each scoring 19 first quarter points, but in the second Oberlin was able to take over holding Resurrection Christian to just 7 second quarter points and scoring 18 giving them a sizeable lead at halftime.

Oberlin was able to come out of halftime and win both second half quarters giving them the 17 point victory.

Helping Oberlin to the win was the 27 turnovers that they were able to force.

Oberlin also got some good bench play, after the game Oberlin coach Dick Ahlberg said.

"Our play from the bench was very good. Andy Inman really contributed tonight with 13 points and 5 assists. Balanced scoring was a positive. Jason Thomas was very active tonight with 9 rebounds and 4 steals."

Oberlin had four boys in double figures, leading the way was Teryn Grafel with 15, Andy Inman had 13, Jesse Juenemann 12, and Jason Thomas 10.

Bonham led Resurrection Christian in scoring with 22 and was their only player in double figures.

Oberlin moves on to play Oakley Friday night and improved their record to 5-4.

OBERLIN -- The Oberlin girls drew Resurrection Christian in the first round of the invitational. Both teams came into the game with winning record and looking to improve it further.

Oberlin got off to a quick start ending the first quarter with a 18-6 lead.

Resurrection Christian played even with Oberlin in the second but Oberlin came out of halftime and won the third quarter convincingly.

The dominating first and third quarters was enough to propel the Red Devils to the 59-38 win.

Sophmore Lauren Fortin led Oberlin in scoring with 14. Jamie Elwood contributed 13, and Tricia Dorshorst added 10.

Oberlin improves their record to 6-3 and moves on to the second round tonight to play Hoxie.

BENKELMAN -- Wallace traveled to Dundy County and got an impressive win last night.

Wallace's Mark Christiansen torched the nets for 30 points.

Wallace had three boys reach double figures led by Mark Christianson who had 30, Dan Swanson 11, and Wily Sowli 10.

Dundy County 's Kyle Glidden and Josey Stroup each scored 9.

Dundy County's teams play at Southwest Friday night.

Helped by a big second quarter and getting 18 team steals Dundy County was able to overcome their 31 team turnovers and improve their record to 5-7.

Echo Steele led the way for Dundy County with 10 points and also grabbed 6 rebounds.
