John Eckhardt died Friday (Jan. 14, 2005) at Community Hospital of McCook at the age of 83.

He was born Dec. 2, 1921, in McCook, the son of the late Jacob and Katie (Heinbigner) Eckhardt. In 1926, the family moved to a farm near Culbertson where he grew up and graduated from Culbertson High School in 1938.

He entered the United States Navy in 1942 serving during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the service in 1946, he returned to Culbertson where he married Geneva Bartel on Nov. 26, 1946. They moved to Denver, Colo., where he worked for eight years at Gates Rubber Company and operated his own carpet cleaning business. In 1953, they returned to Culbertson and he operated the family farm until 1980. He worked for Frenchman Valley Irrigation in 190 and at Kuglers Oil Company from 1992 until retirement.

He was past president of the District 21 School Board and a life member of the Culbertson VFW, the McCook Elks Lodge and the Eagles Club. He was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Culbertson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George Eckhardt, Reynold Eckhardt, Jake Heinbigner; sisters, Natalie Kern, Elizabeth Hidy; and Ester Sinner.

John is survived by his wife Geneva Eckhardt of McCook; one daughter Debra Axtell and husband, Ron of North Platte; and one son, John D. Eckhardt and wife, Sherie of Minden; five grandchildren, Christopher Axtell and wife, Amy, Heather Axtell and fiance, Bill Prietauer, Jessika Eckhardt, Kati Eckhardt, Jakob Eckhardt, two step-grandchildren, Shaun Wilder and Travis Wilder; four great-grandchildren, Garrett Axtel, Grady Axtell, Griffin Axtell and Camron Preitauer; brothers, Jake Eckhardt and wife, Marge of Englewood, Colo., Dave Eckhardt and wife, Florence of Emoch, Utah; sisters Katherine Adams of McCook, Darlene Leibbrandt and husband, Dale of Danbury; and Marion Roach of Centennial, Colo.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, 10 a .m., at Herrmann Memorial Chapel in McCook with Pastor Jim Martin officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m., at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell. Memorials may be given in his name and friends may call Herrmann Funeral Home from 9 a.m.,-9 p.m.
