Water project passes environmental test

Monday, January 10, 2005

The City of McCook has received word that the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality has found that the city's proposed new treatment center and water wells will present "no significant impact" on the environment.

The decision brings the city one step closer to receiving nearly $10 million in State Revolving Loan Funds to fund the city's new water treatment facility. The city will be eligible for $100,000 in loan forgiveness.

The city qualifies for a 30-year loan at a 2.8 percent interest rate. The state also will charge a 1 percent annual administrative fee.

The State Revolving Loan Fund also will provide a 20-year loan at a 2.5 percent interest rate for the acquisition of land to be put aside for wellhead protection.

According to the report, sent by Michael J. Linder, director of the Department of Environmental Quality, the department found no significant negative impact from the proposed plans and there will be no need for further investigation.
