Dec. 23, 1917-Jan. 1, 2005

Helen Irene Jewell of Santa Barbara, Calif., passed away peacefully in her home Jan. 1, 2005.

She was born in Wilsonville on Dec. 23, 1917, to Edward and Jesse (Walker) Cuckler.

Helen was watched over by her three children, Robert, Nancy and Diane and her two devoted caregivers, Gloria and Carol.

Helen was born and raised in Nebraska. After the death of her first husband, Helen attended the New York College of Interior Design. Like her ancestors, she was a true pioneer, opening a drapery and interior design studio, a first in McCook to serve Southwestern Nebraska. From the modest beginning, her design studio evolved into a premier center of interior design clients from Kansas, Colorado, South Dakota and throughout the State of Nebraska.

While in McCook, she met and married CT Jewell, a prominent business and real estate developer. After several visits to Santa Barbara, they fell in love with the area, which promoted a move to the lovely coastal town, where she and CT lived for 50 years.

Helen is survived by one sister, (Hazel) Mrs. Ralph Reines of Flagstaff, Ariz.; one brother, Raymond Cuckler of Yuma, Ariz.; her devoted and loving children, Robert Jewell of Santa Barbara, Diane Jewell of Malibu, Calif., Nancy (Jewell) Tarnutzer of Newport Beach, Calif., C. Terrol Jewell of Santa Ynez, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Robert W. Green in 1951 and Clifford T. Jewell in 1992; and four brothers.

The family is eternally grateful to the Visiting Nurses Association and the Alzheimer's Association of Santa Barbara for their compassion and guidance. Memorials may be made to these organizations in memory of our mother.

McDermott-Crockett Mortuary, 1903 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101.
