Sarah Jane Beneda, 96, died Friday (Dec. 24, 2004) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.
She was born Sept. 25, 1908, to Robert and Bessie (Goodenberger) Kennedy in Decatur County, Kan. She grew up in Cedar Bluffs, Kan., and graduated from Decatur County High School in Oberlin in 1930. She began teaching in rural schools in Decatur County.
On May 1, 1934, she married John Beneda in Traer, Kan. The farmed south of McCook and from 1958 to 1970 they farmed on the Senator George Norris Estate. They retired in 1970 and moved to McCook, where they spent the remainder of their lives.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in McCook.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John on Oct. 14, 2003; one granddaughter, Penney Wood on Feb. 12, 1992; three brothers, Edgar, Walter and Fred Kennedy; five sisters, Mary Siegfried, Printha Weber, Dollie Brown, Vada Leitner and Anna Leitner.
Survivors include one son, Owen Beneda and wife, Lois Jane of McCook; one daughter, Mary Ann Wood and husband, Larry of McCook; three brothers-in-law, Delbert Siegfried of Arapahoe, Lloyd Beneda of Oberlin and Everett Beneda of LaPine, Ore.; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Kennedy of McCook and Mabel Kennedy of Goodland, Kan.
Services are Tuesday, 2 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in McCook with the Rev. James Denny officiating. Interment will be in the Oberlin Cemetery in Oberlin.
