Clarence L. "Pete" Schlegel died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook at the age of 87.
He was born Nov. 10, 1917, in Hitchcock County, the son of the late Asa E. and Lulu Maude (Sommers) Schlegel. At an early age he was baptized in the Zion Hill Methodist Church. He received his education in rural Culbertson.
On Oct. 27, 1937, Clarence married Lucille Elizabeth Wilson in Oberlin. They moved to a farm northeast of Culbertson where they farmed together complementing each other as loving husband and wife and best friends. Pete stayed active in farming in Hitchcock County until 1982. He enjoyed fixing and remodeling the old homestead where the couple has lived for the last 25 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Willard; two sisters, Myrtle Bortner and Rosa Nelson-Wilcox; and a niece, Carol Ann (Swallow) Houck, who had lived with the couple when she was a young girl.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille; two brothers, Gene and wife, Edna of Vancouver, Wash., and Arthur and wife, Charlene of Pueblo, Colo.; one sister, Wilma Schilz and husband, Leo of Ogallala; two nephews, Bob Swallow and wife, Sharon of Houston, Texas and Ron Swallow of Omaha -- who, as young boys, lived with the couple; nephew, Harley Houck and wife, Arla of Axtell; three sisters-in-law, Helen Schlegel of McCook, Lillian Swallow of Lincoln and Laura Fisher of Hector, Ark.; one brother-in-law, Edward Wilson and wife, Barbara of Battle Creek, Mich.; plus numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are today, 2 p.m., at Herrmann Memorial Chapel in McCook with the Rev. Dan Spearow officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.
Memorials may be given in his name and friends may call at Herrmann Funeral Home from 9 a.m.-9 p.m., until time of service.
