CAMBRIDGE -- Cambridge rolled to a 54-20 victory over Eustis-Farnam in boys' basketball play here Friday night. Cambridge is the Class C-2 2003 state champions.

Anthony Lytle lit up the boards with 22 points to lead the winning Trojans. Waid Vontz chipped in 14 points.

The Knights were led in scoring by Wetovick with seven points.

Cambridge was 8-for-10 from the line for 80 percent. Eustis-Farnam tossed in two of four free throws for 50 percent.

The Trojans pulled down 32 rebounds while the Knights grabbed 34.

Eustis-Farnam travels to Arnold Saturday. Cambridge plays Wauneta-Palisade at Wauneta Friday.

CAMBRIDGE -- The Cambridge girls basketball team improved to 2-0 on the young season, defeating Eustis-Farnam 65-38 Friday night.

Staci Moore led all scorers with 23 points. Kaci Nickerson added 14 points and Andi Langley chipped in 10 for the Trojans.

Lauren Gengenbach, Lisa Fagot and Jessika Lehmann had five points each to pace Eustis-Farnam.

WAUNETA -- The Wauneta-Palisade girls basketball team handed Arapahoe a 73-53 setback on Friday night.

Wauneta-Palisade's Janae Harris led all scorers with 25 points and Kiane Alberts added 19 for the Broncos.

Arapahoe was led in scoring by Abby Breinig with 15 points, followed by Cheryl Braithwait with 11.

The Wauneta-Palisade boys defeated Arapahoe 61-59. Arapahoe was ranked anywhere from No. 1 to No. 5 in various polls.

TRENTON -- Hayes Center improved to 2-0 by outlasting Hitchcock County, 63-59 in high school boys basketball action Friday night.

Curtis Olson was the high scorer, dropping in 22 points for Hayes Center. Joseph Frecks added 12 points and Brandt Hagan 11.

John Thompson led Hitchcock County with 20 points.

Josh Kershaw added 16 and Chancy Carlson had 12 points for the Falcons.

Hayes Center's Terra Bishop led all scorers with 18 points. Mary Gohl added 11 for the Cardinals.

Megan Cole led Hitchcock County with 15 points.

"For as early in the year as it is, both teams played very hard," said Hitchcock County coach Doug Newcomb.

INDIANOLA -- Southwest High School fell to Grant, 44-36, in girls' basketball play here Friday night.

Savannah Noyes tossed in 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Southwest.

Leading scorer for Grant was Abby McClosky with 12 points.

The Roughriders tossed in six of sixteen free throws for 38 percent. the winning Plainsmen hit six of 14 from the line for 43 percent.

Southwest had 42 turnovers.

Southwest travels to Curtis to meet Medicine Valley Saturday.

MAYWOOD -- Wallace rolled to a 51-29 win over Maywood in girls' basketball play here Friday night.

Alyssa Hazen led the Maywood Tigers with 11 points. Nicola Arensdorf added6 points.

Leading scorer for The Wildcats was Amber Hochstetler with 23 points, followed by Whitney Hochstetler with 11.

Hazen pulled down 12 rebounds for Maywood, while teammate Crystal Zwickl grabbed 11.

"This was a great way to start the season. the score does not show the effort the girls put out," Maywood Coach Kim Stengel said. "We had a shooter from Wallace that just got away from us."

Maywood tossed in five of 15 free throws for 33 percent. Wallace was 6-for-12 from the line for 50 percent.

Maywood plays in the Cattle Trail Tournament at McCook Tuesday.

OBERLIN -- The Oberlin boys basketball team fell short against Oakley Friday night, 56-42.

Oberlin led at the half, 21-18, and 32-31 after three quarters, but Oakley would pull away in the final quarter, outscoring Oberlin 25-10.

Oakley's Chad Baalman had a game high 26 points. Oberlin was led in scoring by Lance Fortin with 17 points.

Andy Inman had eight rebounds to lead the Red Devils.

Oberlin will be back in action on Tuesday against Brewster at the Sagebrush Shootout.

BIG SPRINGS -- Debra Johnson dropped in 25 points to spark a young Wheatland girls basketball team on the way to a 52-44 win over South Platte on Friday night.

"It was a typical first game, pretty hard-fought," Wheatland coach Dave Pruden said.

"But it was a big win for us," he added, with South Platte returning five letterwinners and Wheatland starting two freshmen and a sophomore.

Ashley Day added 14 for Wheatland, while Heather Anderson had 12 points for South Platte and Jen Frickey 10.
