Velma Evelyn Matz, 94, died Friday (Nov. 26, 2004) at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Syracuse. She was 94 years old.
She was born on Aug. 1, 1910, to Allen Henry and Vevia C. (Turner) Poush at Memphis. She grew up in Cambridge and attended Cambridge Public Schools. She came to McCook in 1941 and was employed at Woolworth's and Schuering's Bakery.
On Dec. 29, 1945, she married Peter J. Matz at Oberlin. After her husband's death on Aug. 6, 1959, she started working for DeGroff's Department Store in the ladies apparel department. She retired in 1975.
She was a 50-year member of the First Congregational Church in McCook and Eureka Chapter No. 86 Eastern Star. Other membership included the Daughter's of the Nile- Hastings, Bahia Nilettes, Federated Woman's Club, Burlington Northern Veteran's Ladies Auxiliary and American Association of Retired People.
She was preceded in death by her parents. Allen and Vevia Poush; her husband, Peter Matz; three brothers, Paul, Homer and Omar in infancy; and sister-in-law Ruth Poush.
Survivors include niece, Barbara Clark and husband, Scott of Syracuse; great-nephew, Joshua Clark and wife Amy of Ashland; great-niece, Hilary Seelhoff and husband Andy of Unadilla; and sister-in-law Virginia Poush of Syracuse; and two great-great nephews.
Services were today, 1:30 p.m., at the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Steve King officiating. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery in Cambridge.
Memorials may be given in her name to the First Congregational Church or the McCook Senior Center.
