ECKERTY, Ind. -- Herbert Newton, 78, died Wednesday (Oct. 6, 2004) as a result of an auto accident.
He was born April 23, 1926, to Scott and Sophia (Jones) Newton in Crawford County, Ind.
On Oct. 17, 1946, he married Betty Jean Esch at St. John's Lutheran Church southeast of McCook. The couple farmed until 1970, when they moved to Eckerty, Ind., where they spent the remainder of their lives.
He served as a Crawford County Commissioner for District Two.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Dec. 29, 2003; and one son, Lyle Douglas Newton in 1965.
Survivors include one son, Steven Newton of Hays, Kan.; two daughters, Diana Butler and husband, Terry of Omaha and Regina Newton of Bloomington, Ind.; step-mother, Mae Newton of English, Ind.; one sister, Marie Underwood of Muncie, Ind.; two brothers, Orin Newton of Eckerty and Darrel Newton of Ramsey, Ind.; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside inurnment will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Stahla officiating.
