CURTIS -- Ivan Guy Schultz, died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at Sunset Haven Nursing Home in Curtis at the age of 77.

He was born Dec. 23, 1926, at Beaver City to Emmil August and Jesse Marie (Coykendall) Schultz. He attended grade school in Moorefield until 1935 when he moved with his family to a farm north of Moorefield. He finished elementary school at District 48 north of Moorefield and graduated from Moorefield High School in 1942.

He farmed locally until enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1946. Ivan attended Riggers School in Ft. Lewis, Wash., and was a military policeman. After his enlistment ended, he attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

He was united in marriage to Vernelle M. Mercer on April 7, 1951, in McCook. To this marriage were born six children. They made their home in Moorefield where Ivan worked for the Moorefield Coop, sold Farm Bureau Insurance and farmed an acreage north of Moorefield. He also served on the Moorefield School Board. In 1962 they bought the Gambles Store in Curtis and the family moved to Curtis in 1963.

He was very active in the community. Ivan was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, served on the Sunset Nursing Home Board for 23 years, served on the Curtis Medical Board and helped get the Curtis Medical Clinic built. He also assisted in getting the first two doctors to come to town. He was active with youth sports and was either coaching one of his six kids in baseball or softball or announcing their ball games at Mill Park.

In 1975 he sold the Gambles store and went to work for the Maywood Coop as manager of the Moorefield elevator until he retired in 1991. Ivan enjoyed all sports and loved to read. He was very interested in Nebraska and Frontier County history. He enjoyed his kids and his 15 grandkids.

Survivors include his wife, Vernelle Schultz of Curtis; daughters, Teresa (Sidney) Porter of South Sioux City, Barbara (Mark) Vreeland of Keller, Texas, Sandra (Terry) Peterson of Hastings, Patricia (Rik) Weiss of Omaha; son, Rodney (Jeani) Schultz of Zionsville, Ind., Michael (Adelheid) Schultz of Darmstadt, Germany; 15 grandchildren, Lisa (Mike) Treadway, Justin Schultz, Jessica Porter, Sean Vreeland, Daniel Schultz, Derek Peterson, Brooke Schultz, Reese Porter, Dustin Peterson, Kenny Weiss, Tommy Weiss, Noah Schultz, Carson Weiss, Christian Schultz and Nolan Weiss; brothers, Dallas Schultz of Morgan Hill, Calif., James "Jim" (Patt) Schultz of Yuma, Ariz., Sidney "Sid" (Kathy) Schultz of Curtis, Stuart Schultz of Moorefield; sister-in-law, Marge Schultz of Lincoln; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, one sister Betty June and one brother Emmil Jr.

Memorial services were today, Nov. 22, 2004, 10:30 a.m., at the United Methodist Church, Curtis, with inurnment in the Moorefield Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church or to Sunset Haven Nursing Home.
