BENKELMAN -- Harry Harold Steier, 87, died Thursday (Oct. 28, 2004) at the Hester Memorial Nursing Home in Benkelman.
He was born Jan. 28, 1917, to Paul and Lizzie (Zwiekl) Steier in Herndon. After completing his education, he assisted his parents on the farm and hired out to other farmers in Kansas and Nebraska. In the fall, he would travel to pick corn by hand.
In June of 1942, he enlisted in the Army and served until October 1943 in World War II. He returned to Herndon.
On June 28, 1944, he married Edna Luetta Grams in St. Francis. The couple purchased a farm three miles from the Hiawatha community in rural Dundy County. They spent most of their lives on the farm. He was employed by the USDA as a grain inspector. The couple retired in Imperial.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edna on Nov. 16, 1944; brothers, Walter, Herb and Bob Steier; sisters, Emma Schiessler and Helen Schwarz.
Survivors include sisters-in-law, Wilma Steier and Frieda Steier, both of McCook; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are Wednesday, 10 a.m. (MST), at the Westside Church of Christ in Imperial with the Rev. Bill Lewis officiating. Interment will be at the Benkelman Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion Post. 65 of Benkelman.
Visitation is today until 6 p.m. (MST), at Liewer Funeral Home in Imperial.
A memorial has been established in his memory.
