Bison volleyball 4th at GNAC Tournament

COLUMBUS -- The McCook High School volleyball team placed fourth at the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference Tournament Saturday.

The GNAC Tournament was played at Columbus.

The Bison posted a 1-2 record and will take an 8-22 record into the Nebraska Class B-5 district tournament Thursday at Kearney.

McCook defeated Scottsbluff, the No. 8-ranked team in Class B, 28-26, 20-25, 25-22.

The Bison lost to North Platte 25-18, 25-10 in the semifinals and Kearney 25-23, 25-14 in the third-place match.

In the Scottsbluff match, the Bison were led in ace serves by Denae Owens with 4, followed by Allyx Shields with 3, Sara Cappel 2 and Jennifer Chmiel 2.

Shields had 9 kills, followed by Allison Smith 9 and Cappel 6. Abbee Haney had 12 set assists and Jessica Watkins 12.

Shields had 2 blocks, Courtney Moore 1 and Smith 1. Cappel had 9 digs, Moore 8 and Owens 6.

In the North Platte match, Cappel and Moore each had 1 ace serve. Moore had 6 kills, Smith 4 and Shields 2. Moore had 8 digs, Cappel 7 and Owens 5.

In the Kearney match, Chmiel had 2 ace serves. Smith and Moore each had 7 kills and Cappel 5. Smith had 1 block. Owens had 11 digs, Cappel 10 and Haney 6.

"We got a great win against Scottsbluff, the No. 8 team in Class B," said McCook coach Krystal Weber. "We played competitively against North Platte and Kearney."

The Bison play Holdrege at 8 p.m. Thursday at Kearney in the Class B-5 district opener.

Lexington plays Hastings at 4 p.m., followed by Grand Island Northwest vs. the Lexington-Hastings winner at 6 p.m.

The district title match is slated for 7 p.m. Friday.
