Wauneta-Palisade wins GPAC volleyball tourney

TRENTON -- The Golden Plains Activities Conference volleyball tournament wrapped up in Trenton last night, with Wauneta-Palisade taking first place.

The Broncos defeated Hayes Center in the semifinals 25-18, 26-24.

Janae Harris had eight kills to lead Wauneta-Palisade. Stephanie Padilla had nine assists.

Terra Bishop led Hayes Center with six kills and Mary Gohl added three. Amy Cox led the Cardinals with six assists.

"The girls were very excited and ready to play this game. Our serves hurt us a little, but we were able to come around," said Broncos coach Randee Littrell.

In the other semifinal, Wallace downed Wheatland 25-21, 25-21.

Whitney Hochstetler led Wallace with seven kills.

Jessica Smith had seven assists for the Wildcats. Tiffany Harris chipped in six assists.

In the consolation match, Hayes Center defeated Wheatland for third place, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21.

Gohl and Bishop had five kills each. Dove Messersmith and Jenny Hamilton each added four kills.

Cox had 12 assists to lead the Cardinals and Messersmith added eight.

Wauneta-Palisade topped Wallace in the championship match, 25-12, 25-23.

Janae Harris, Betsy Anderjaska, and Kiane Alberts each had six kills for the Broncos.

Padilla had 20 assists for Wauneta-Palisade.

Hochstetler had six kills for Wallace. Hubbard and Angie Scherbarth each added five.

Jessica Smith had 11 assists and Tiffany Harris five for the Wildcats.

"I am very proud of the girls and definetly think we are ready for subdistricts," said Littrell.

Arapahoe Invite

ARAPAHOE -- The home team Arapahoe split a pair of matches and Cambridge lost both of its matches at the Arapahoe Invitational last night.

Arapahoe defeated Cambridge 28-26, 17-25, 26-24.

Abbey Breinig had seven kills to lead Arapahoe. Cheyrl Braithwait had 11 assists for the Warriors.

Lisa Minnick led Cambridge with 12 kills, and Andi Langley added seven. Langley also had 16 assists, while Cristin Bruckman added 12 assists.

Arapahoe fell to Elm Creek 25-9, 25-19.

Elm Creek then downed Cambridge 25-20, 25-22.

Minnick had seven kills and Langley five in the loss to Elm Creek.

Bruckman had seven assists and Langley chipped in five for Cambridge.

Bison spikers fall

to Chase County

IMPERIAL -- In the last regular season game for the Bison, McCook fell to Chase County last night in three straight sets, 25-15, 25-23, 25-18.

Allison Smith and Sara Cappel each had nine kills for McCook. Allyx Shields added seven kills.

Abbee Haney had 14 assists to lead the team. Jessica Watkins added 12 assists.

McCook finished the regular season 7-20.

"We were really disappointed in our efforts on the court," said McCook volleyball coach Krystal Weber. "We didn''t play with the intensity and focus that we have been playing with at the end of the season here. We didn't pass the ball extremely well out of serve receive, and we didn't move our feet on defense.

"We haven't had a great week of practice. We've been out of school a couple of days and we have some kids not feeling well. We need to get back into a routine and pick it up the next couple of days.

"We are now just playing a waiting game today to see what the final seedings for districts will be. The girls were excited on the way to Imperial as we had moved ahead of Lexington in power points over the weekend, putting us in the No. 3 seed for next Thursday.

"A win at Chase County would have sealed the deal. Now, we have to wait and see how other teams faired and how the points race will play out."

Southwest sweeps

Medicine Valley,

Dundy County

BENKELMAN -- The Southwest volleyball team defeated Medicine Valley and Dundy County last night in four sets.

The Roughriders downed Medicine Valley 25-12, 25-10.

Savannah Noyes had seven kills to lead Southwest. Chelsey Quigley and Cayla Skaritka each added four kills.

Quigley served for 15 points against the Raiders. Michala Foster added nine points serving.

Brittany McConville had 12 assists for Southwest. Christina Lee chipped in three assists.

Southwest then topped Dundy County 25-9, 26-24.

Noyes had 10 kills to lead Southwest. Foster served for 14 points. McConville served for six points and had 13 assists.

Dundy County defeated Medicine Valley 25-11, 25-19.

So. Valley loses

at Franklin Invite

FRANKLIN -- Red Cloud defeated Southern Valley 25-18, 25-19 at the Franklin Invitational last night.

Janae Perkins had six kills and Megan Becker had five to lead Southern Valley.

Alyssa Steele had 12 assists for the Eagles. Janae Perkins and Ashley Strickland led Southern Valley with 11 digs each.

Southern Valley ended the regular season 2-21.

Chase County

sweeps Bison

soph, JV squads

IMPERIAL -- The McCook junior varsity and sophomore teams both lost at Imperial Tuesday against Chase County.

The Bison JV fell 25-16, 25-10.

McCook's leading server was Erica Clapp, who was 2-for-2 with 1 ace. Kim Miller was 4-for-10 in hits with 4 kills.

The setters were Alyssa Cook, 30-for-30 with 5 assists; and Erica Clapp 28-for-29, 5 assists.

"We committed 26 ball-handling errors on the way to lmperial's two straight set wins," said McCook JV/sophomore coach George Briggs.

The junior varsity's final season record is 8-6.

The sophomores lost 26-24, 25-15.

Betsy Kohmetscher was 8-for-8 serving with 5 aces and was 4-for-8 hitting with 3 kills. Clapp was 17-for-18 setting with 6 assists

"A week ago we really played Imperial tough in the Southwest Frosh/Soph Tournament and defeated them in straight sets," Briggs said. "We just played poorly tonight committing 30 ball handling errors which obviously led to easy points for Imperial. Really, they only had to make 20 points on their own plays. No one is going to win matches with stats like that.

"For the most part, our ball handling errors were because we just did not come to play at the level necessary to win."

The sophomores' final season record is 5-5.
