Southwest places second at Cozad volleyball invite

COZAD -- Several area teams competed at the Cozad Volleyball Invitational Saturday.

Southwest took second place, falling to Gothenburg in the final match.

In first round action, Gothenburg defeated Eustis-Farnam 25-14, 25-18; Sutherland defeated Alma 25-10, 25-22; Southwest defeated Grant 25-8, 25-10; and Cozad defeated Cambridge 27-29, 25-17, 25-20.

In the loser's bracket, Eustis-Farnam downed Alma 25-21, 27-25 to move on the the game for fifth place against Grant.

Grant topped Cambridge 16-25, 25-23, 25-21.

Alma defeated Cambridge for seventh place 25-23, 25-22.

Eustis-Farnam picked up the win over Grant for fifth place 25-17, 28-26.

On the winner's side of the bracket, Gothenburg downed Sutherland in one semifinal 31-29, 15-25, 25-15.

Southwest defeated Cozad in the other 25-8, 25-10.

Sutherland took third place, dropping Cozad, 25-15, 25-16.

Southwest then fell to Gothenburg in straight sets, 25-18, 25-19.

Southwest returns to action tomorrow, hosting Medicine Valley and Dundy County.

Cambridge will be at Arapahoe/Elm Creek Tuesday. Eustis-Farnam hosts Maxwell. Grant travels to Garden County Tuesday.

at home tourney

OXFORD -- The Southern Valley volleyball team went 1-2 at the Southern Valley Invitational on Saturday.

Southern Valley picked up its first win of the season in pool play, downing Bertrand 25-17, 24-26, 25-21 in "Pool A".

Janae Perkins led the Eagles with 12 kills. Alyssa Steele had 14 assists.

Bertrand then fell the North Platte St. Pats 25-21, 20-25, 25-12.

NPSP bested Southern Valley in straight sets, 25-20, 25-16.

Megan Becker had six kills and Steele had five assists.

In "Pool B", Arapahoe fell to Wilcox-Hildreth 23-25, 25-21, 15-25.

Alesa Paulsen had four kills to lead the Warriors. Kelsi Ervin had five assists.

Superior then knocked off Wilcox-Hildreth 25-20, 25-16.

Superior topped Arapahoe 25-14, 25-20.

Paulsen again led the team with three kills, Ervin had five assists.

Arapahoe and Bertrand played for fifth place, with Arapahoe winning 25-18, 10-25, 25-18.

Abbey Breinig had seven kills and Cheryl Braithwait to lead Arapahoe. Ervin had nine assists. Paulsen had five ace serves.

Wilcox-Hildreth defeated Southern Valley for third place, 25-22, 25-17.

Perkins had five kills for Southern Valley, Steele had nine assists.

NPSP got the win over Superior for first place, 25-20, 25-17.

Oberlin volleyball season

ends with 1-1 mark at substate

ST. FRANCIS -- Oberlin ended the volleyball season at Substate on Saturday, defeating Wichita County-Leoti and falling to Hoxie.

The Red Devils opened with a win over Wichita County-Leoti 25-12, 25-22.

Lauren Fortin was nine of nine serving with one ace.

Kaitlyn Stapp had a team high nine assists and Tricia Dorshorst had five kills to lead the team.

"We played well against Wichita County, we started out aggressive and continued to dominate the entire game," said coach Patricia Dorshorst.

Oberlin then lost to Hoxie, 25-19, 27-25.

Heather Williams was 11 of 11 serving with one ace to lead the Oberlin serving.

Lydia Karnopp had five kills and Dorshorst had two assists.

"The girls improved a lot throughout the season," said Dorshorst, "I am proud of their sportsmanship, their work ethic, their competitiveness, and their teamwork.

"We are disappointed in this year's outcome, but we have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming years."

Oberlin finished the season with a 16-13 record.
