Because of strength of schedule, the McCook High School softball team has the top seed at the B-6 District tournament, which starts Thursday in Gering at Carpenter Field.

Lexington is the No. 2 seed, followed by Scottsbluff, Gering and Alliance.

McCook will open at 2 p.m. MT. against the winner of fourth-seed Gering and

fifth-seed Alliance. If McCook wins, it would play the winner of Lexington and

Scottsbluff at 6 p.m. MT. A loss would be a game at 8 p.m. MT. on Thursday.

McCook has five starters batting over .300 with Jillian Bryant and Kayla Wilson leadingthe team with a .329 average.

Michelle McKenna is hitting .321 followed by Austin Wilson at .316 and Kori Collins at .304.

Jillian Bryant leads the Bison in runs batted in with 21, followed by Wilson, McKenna and Austin Wilson with 13.

McCook's leading base stealer is Jessica Einspahr with 12, followed by Kori Collins and Kim Serbousek with 10.

Einspahr has scored 16 runs followed by 15 by Serbousek and 14 by Austin Wilson.

In the pitching department, Stephanie Douglas has the best earned run average with a 1.105 ERA and a 7-5 record with 65 strikeouts in 76 innings.

Taryn Placzek has a 1.149 ERA with a 7-4 record with 48 strikeouts in 67 innings.

"We have a lot of depth at all positions especially pitching with Douglas, Placzek, Wallace and Hiatt, all of whom have pitched in big games during the season," said McCook softball coach Dale Lortz.

"The team .277 team batting average is higher than it's been for a few years.

"Our biggest asset is the strength of schedule playing 12 Class A teams and some of the top teams in Class B, which has prepared us for this time of year. It should be a fun tournament with

"Lexington and us from the east and the western teams playing at home. We must not take anyone lightly in the tournament."
