Eugene H. Maddux, 68, of Kearney, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at his residence.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., on Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney with the Rev. Ron Harris officiating. Further services will be at 5 p.m, (MDT), on Friday at the United Methodist Church in Wauneta. The Rev. Judy Dye will officiate at Wauneta. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Wauneta. Military rites will be conducted by the Wauneta Veterans Group. Visitation will be from 1-4 p.m., on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the UNK Foundation. He was born April 14, 1936, in Wauneta to Glen and Eva (Fanning) Maddux. He grew up in Wauneta and graduated from Wauneta High School in 1954. He received a bachelor of science degree at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo.; an MBA from Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y., and a master of arts degree in education from Kearney State College, he had earned 35 hours toward a Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He joined the United States Air Force in 1958 and flew KC-97 and KC-135 tanker re-fuelers during the Vietnam War, logging over 5,000 hours of flying time. He served in the Air Force until November of 1972. On Oct. 29, 1961, he married Loree Wolter in Salina, Kan. He was an instructor at UNK in history and biology. He was also a substitute teacher at Kearney Catholic High School, Amherst High School and the Kearney Public Schools in a variety of subjects.
He was a member of several professional organizations and was published in history, zoology and ornithology.
Survivors include his wife, Loree of Kearney; son, Peter Glen and wife, Cyndy of Lincoln; daughters, Susan Lynch and husband, Chandler and Cathy Walter, both of Kearney, and Peggy Haslam and husband, George of Moreno Valley, Calif.; grandchildren, Kay and Kim Haslam of Moreno Valley and Sean and Hali of Kaneohe, Hawaii; brother, Jack and wife, Carol Maddux of Wauneta; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
