"The team got off to a good start by taking two of the three doubles matches," said McCook tennis coach Matt Wiemers. "Both 1 and 2 doubles teams played better than they did at York last Friday.

In singles Joel, Brett, Brandon and Harrison picked up wins. Brett and Brandon continued to play well. Joel played a rematch with Longo and came away with another narrow margin win."

Grand Island Central Catholic, won 5-4

1 Putz-Brooks lost to Johnson-Bennett, 8-4

2 Burton-Ford lost to Howard-Northup, 8-3

3 Potthoff-Crick defeated Kulus-Ryan, 8-6

"We dropped two of three doubles matches to start off the duel," Wiemers said.

"GICC is always toughest in doubles. They have a solid 1 and 2, as their returning players from last year are playing those positions.

They both will be tough to beat at the state tournament. The team responed well in singles play and won 4 of the 6 matches. I'm pleased with how things turned out. We needed 4 singles wins and picked 4 singles wins.

"We did not play well in either duel as a team. It was nice to pick up two duel wins, but I'm concerned with the team's effort and attitude.

"We need to get better with each match, but the team took a step backwards. As I said before we have the talent to become a great team, but the guys are going to have to work hard and play at a higher level.

"I'm dissapointed with some of our team's playing ability. If they don't start to get after things we are going to struggle.

"The team is going to have refocus on what they want to accomplish this season. We have a tough stretch ahead against some excellent teams. We need to play better and execute the fundamentals more consistently."
